For a first Asian golf holiday, Chiang Mai is the simpler pick: every course takes visitors, green-season all-in rounds run ฿1,950 to ฿3,700, and courses sit 30 to 45 minutes from town. The Philippines rewards golfers with a member contact or a Clark base, but members-only clubs, Manila traffic and a July to October typhoon peak add friction.
Is Chiang Mai or the Philippines better for a golf holiday?
Chiang Mai wins on access, price clarity and transfer times. The Philippines wins on beach pairing and the dense Clark cluster near one airport.
We run golf trips in Chiang Mai, so read this with that in mind. We have tried to be fair. The Philippines has real strengths: a Jack Nicklaus 36-hole complex south of Manila, a growing golf hub at Clark, and island courses in Cebu where you can play in the morning and swim in the afternoon.
The difference shows up in logistics. In Chiang Mai, a visitor can play every course in our Chiang Mai golf course directory without a sponsor. Prices are published for green season. One airport, one valley, short drives. In the Philippines, the trip depends on which island, which club, and whether the club lets you in at all.
| Factor | Chiang Mai | Philippines (Manila / Clark / Cebu) |
|---|---|---|
| Visitor access | Every course in our directory open to visitors | Some top Manila clubs members-only or need endorsement |
| Typical transfer | 30-45 min from the city | About 1.5 hrs Manila to Southwoods; Clark under 1 hr from its airport |
| Premium round, all-in | ฿3,400-3,700 green season 2026 | Quoted per club, varies by season and day |
| Weather risk | Burning-season haze, mid-Jan to mid-Apr | Typhoon peak July to October |
| Beach on the same trip | No, needs a flight south | Yes, in Cebu and other islands |
| Caddies | Mandatory, ฿300-400 fee | Common at most clubs |
Can visitors actually get a tee time at the best courses?
In Chiang Mai, yes, at every course. In Manila, not reliably: several prestige clubs are members-only or require a member to endorse or accompany you.
This is the biggest practical gap. Titleist's regional guide to golf in the Philippines (accessed 2026-10-04) notes that you usually need a member's endorsement or company at private courses, and lists Manila Golf Club as exclusive to members. Guest-friendly options exist, including Club Intramuros, Sherwood Hills and Mt. Malarayat, but the shortlist is narrower than the headline course count suggests.
Chiang Mai has no such gate. Chiang Mai Highlands Golf & Spa, Alpine Golf Resort and Royal Chiang Mai all take visitors. Peak season (November to February) limits when you can play, not whether you can. Our booking lead time by season guide covers how far ahead to book.
How do course quality and design compare?
Both have named-architect courses. The Philippines has Nicklaus at Southwoods. Chiang Mai has Schmidt-Curley, Ron Garl and Peter Thomson within a 45-minute radius.
Manila Southwoods is the Philippine standout for visitors: 36 holes of Jack Nicklaus design across two courses, south of the capital (Golfasian, accessed 2026-10-04).
Chiang Mai's top tier is spread across more designers:
- Chiang Mai Highlands: Lee Schmidt (Schmidt-Curley), 2005, 27 holes, paspalum, 130+ bunkers. The most consistently conditioned course we book.
- Alpine Golf Resort: Ron Garl, 2008, 27 holes up to about 7,540 yards. A past Asian Tour venue.
- Royal Chiang Mai: Peter Thomson, 1996, a links-style layout with pot bunkers.
- Gassan Panorama: a long layout with a rare par 6, and one of the best-value rounds in the valley.
Honest caveat: conditioning in Chiang Mai is uneven below the top two. Royal Chiang Mai varies, and Summit Green Valley gets recurring greens complaints despite being one of the pricier rounds. Our best golf courses in Chiang Mai ranking explains which ones we steer guests toward.
What does a round cost in each destination?
Chiang Mai green-season 2026 all-in rates run ฿1,950 to ฿3,700. Philippine premium clubs mostly quote per booking rather than publishing rack rates.
For the Philippines, Golfasian's Southwoods page says green fees "vary by season and day of the week" rather than listing a number (accessed 2026-10-04). We won't invent a Manila figure. Get quotes from two operators for the same dates and compare them like for like, checking whether caddie fees, carts and transfers are included.
High-season Chiang Mai rates (November to March) are higher and published less consistently, so confirm at booking. Our Chiang Mai golf holiday cost breakdown shows where the money goes on a full trip.
How long are the transfers from airport to first tee?
Chiang Mai's airport is 4 km from the Old City and courses are 30 to 45 minutes out. Manila to Southwoods is about 1.5 hours, and traffic can make it longer.
Distance is where Chiang Mai earns its keep. A taxi from CNX to the Old City is roughly ฿150 to ฿200 and 10 to 15 minutes. North Hill City Golf Club is about 15 minutes from the airport, and Lanna Golf Club about 10 minutes from the Old City. Even Gassan Khuntan, the furthest, is 45 minutes or so.
Manila is a different picture. Golfasian lists Southwoods at about 41 km south of the city, roughly 1.5 hours via the South Luzon Expressway. Two hours or more of driving on a golf day takes a real bite out of your afternoon.
Clark is the Philippine answer to this. Golf Business News (accessed 2026-10-04) reports 12 courses within an hour of Clark International Airport, some only minutes away. If you're set on the Philippines, base in Clark rather than Manila. Our Chiang Mai airport transfer guide covers the CNX side.
When is the weather worst in each place?
The Philippines' risk is typhoons, peaking July to October. Chiang Mai's risk is smoke, from mid-January to mid-April and usually worst in March.
According to PAGASA, the Philippine weather agency (accessed 2026-10-04), around 20 tropical cyclones enter the Philippine area of responsibility each year. A direct hit can close courses and ground flights for days.
Chiang Mai does not get typhoons, but it does get burning season. From late February into April, air quality regularly falls into the unhealthy range, and on the worst days Chiang Mai ranks among the most polluted cities in the world. We tell guests to avoid March. Our burning season golf guide covers the detail.
| Months | Chiang Mai | Philippines |
|---|---|---|
| Nov-Feb | Best: cool, dry, clear, peak pricing | Drier, typhoon risk tapering |
| Mar-Apr | Avoid: burning-season haze | Hot, dry, low storm risk |
| May-Jun | Hot, then green season starts | Rains begin |
| Jul-Oct | Green season: cheapest, morning rounds | Typhoon peak |
The rainy season is different in each place. Chiang Mai's green season brings short afternoon storms, with mornings usually playable and the lowest prices of the year. See the best time for golf in Chiang Mai for the month-by-month view.
How do caddies and on-course culture compare?
Thailand's caddie system is mandatory and consistent: one caddie per golfer, ฿300 to ฿400 fee in Chiang Mai, plus a ฿400 to ฿600 cash tip.
In Chiang Mai, caddies drive the cart, read greens, clean clubs and keep score. You can't opt out. The fee goes to the course. The tip goes straight to your caddie at the bag drop after the round, ฿700 to ฿1,000 for an excellent day. Our caddie culture and tipping guide has the etiquette.
Caddies are common in the Philippines too, but practice varies more by club, especially between private clubs and resort courses. Ask each club about fees and tipping before you go.
Where does the Philippines genuinely beat Chiang Mai?
On beach access and on Clark's density. If you want golf and sea from one base, Chiang Mai can't give you that without a flight.
This is the trade-off we won't hide. Chiang Mai is inland. If your partner wants a beach, or you want to swim after every round, Cebu or another island gives you that in a way a mountain valley can't. Clark also packs 12 courses near one airport, which matches Chiang Mai's convenience.
Our usual fix is a split trip: four rounds in Chiang Mai, then a flight south to Phuket or Hua Hin, which also escapes the worst of the northern haze in March. If you're weighing other alternatives, our Bali vs Chiang Mai golf comparison runs the same test.
Is a package worth it, or should I book each round direct?
For three or more rounds, a package usually pays off through transfers and tee-time handling. For one round, booking direct is often cheaper.
An all-in Chiang Mai golf package covers green fees, caddies, carts, hotel, private driver, airport transfers and on-the-ground support. Private round-trip transfers to a course cost about ฿1,400 to ฿2,500 booked alone, and ride-hailing is unreliable for 6:30am pickups with a golf bag. Bundling those across four rounds is where a package earns its price.
For a single round at Mae Jo, close to town, booking yourself can come out cheaper. We'll say so if you ask. Our booking direct vs agent guide runs the numbers.
Packages to compare: the Weekend Warrior, 3 nights and 3 rounds, the Highlands Classic, 5 nights and 4 rounds, and the Lanna Signature, 7 nights and 5 rounds. We work on enquiry: tell us your dates and group size, we send a quote, and a deposit confirms it.

Is Thailand or the Philippines better for a golf holiday?
For most visiting golfers, Thailand, and Chiang Mai in particular, is the easier trip. Every course we book in Chiang Mai takes visitors without a member sponsor, green-season all-in rates run ฿1,950 to ฿3,700 at the courses we book, and the courses sit 30 to 45 minutes from the city. The Philippines has strong courses, notably the Jack Nicklaus-designed Manila Southwoods and the Clark cluster, but several of Manila's best clubs are members-only and typhoons hit hardest from July to October. Choose the Philippines if you already have a member contact or want to base in Clark.
Can tourists play the top private golf clubs in Manila?
Not always. Several of Metro Manila's prestige clubs either stay members-only or require a member endorsement or accompanying member, and policies change from club to club. Courses that are open to guests include Club Intramuros and several clubs south of Manila such as Sherwood Hills and Mt. Malarayat, according to Titleist's regional golf guide (accessed 2026-10-04). Confirm the current guest rule with each club or a local operator before you build a trip around one course. In Chiang Mai this does not come up: every course in our directory takes visitors.
When is the worst time for a golf trip to the Philippines or Chiang Mai?
The Philippines is riskiest from July to October, the peak of the typhoon season, and PAGASA notes around 20 tropical cyclones enter the Philippine area of responsibility each year. Chiang Mai's worst window is different: burning-season smoke from roughly mid-January to mid-April, usually worst in March, when air quality readings often reach unhealthy levels. For Chiang Mai, November to February is the sweet spot. For the Philippines, the drier December to May stretch is safer for storms.
How much does a round of golf cost in Chiang Mai compared with Manila?
In Chiang Mai, green-season 2026 all-in rates (green fee, caddie fee and cart) run from ฿1,950 at Gassan Legacy and Gassan Panorama to ฿3,400 at Chiang Mai Highlands and ฿3,700 at Alpine Golf Resort, per CMGT Golf's 2026 rate sheets. Manila's premium clubs publish less: Golfasian's Manila Southwoods page says fees vary by season and day of the week rather than listing a rack rate. Expect to get a quote per club in the Philippines. Add a caddie tip of ฿400 to ฿600 per 18 in Chiang Mai.
How far are the golf courses from the airport in each destination?
Chiang Mai International Airport sits about 4 km from the Old City, and the courses ring the valley 30 to 45 minutes out. North Hill City Golf Club is roughly 15 minutes from the airport. In Manila, Golfasian lists Manila Southwoods as about 41 km south of the city, roughly 1.5 hours via the South Luzon Expressway, and Manila traffic can stretch that. Clark is the Philippine exception: 12 courses sit within an hour of Clark International Airport, according to Golf Business News.
Can I combine a Chiang Mai golf trip with a beach?
Yes, but it takes a flight. Chiang Mai is inland and has no beach, which is an honest point in the Philippines' favour if you want golf and sea from one base. Many of our guests play four rounds in Chiang Mai, then fly south to Phuket or Hua Hin for a beach finish. Those southern destinations also sit outside the worst of the northern burning-season haze, so they suit a March or April trip. Send us an enquiry and we will quote the Chiang Mai leg and the transfers around it.
