Golf Holiday Cancellation Policy in Thailand: Chiang Mai

How deposits, balance dates and cancellation scales work on a Chiang Mai golf holiday, with Thailand's legal refund windows and what to check before paying.

By The Chiang Mai Go Tours team06 Oct 20269 min read

Most Chiang Mai golf holidays take a deposit of around 20% at booking, with the balance due roughly 30 to 45 days before travel. Thailand's tourism rules add a legal floor: cancel a package 30 or more days out for a full refund minus documented costs, 15 to 29 days out for 50%, and inside 15 days the operator owes you nothing. Read the quote, then insure the gap.

How does a golf holiday deposit work in Chiang Mai?

You pay a deposit to hold hotel rooms and tee times, then the balance before travel. Expect roughly 20% down at most operators.

A golf package is a bundle of supplier bookings: green fees, caddies, carts, a hotel, a private driver and airport transfers. The deposit pays for the parts that suppliers want held up front. As a market reference, Golfasian publishes a 20% deposit with the balance due 45 days before travel (accessed 6 October 2026).

CMGT Golf is enquiry-driven. You tell us dates, group size and the courses you want through our Chiang Mai golf enquiry page. We reply with a written quote that lists the deposit, the balance date and the cancellation scale. Nothing is booked until you confirm and pay the deposit. There is no instant checkout, and that is on purpose: tee times at Alpine Golf Resort in January get confirmed by a person who has spoken to the course, not by a cart button.

Once the deposit lands, we confirm each tee time and hotel night with the supplier and send you the confirmed plan. The balance reminder comes ahead of the due date, so nobody is chasing money in the last week before you fly.

What does Thai law say about cancelling a tour package?

Thailand's Department of Tourism sets refund windows: 100% at 30+ days, 50% at 15 to 29 days, and no obligation inside 15 days.

Licensed tour operators fall under the Tourism Business and Guide Act B.E. 2551 (2008). According to The Nation's report on the Department of Tourism refund rules (published June 2023, accessed 6 October 2026), the operator can deduct documented third-party costs such as flight or ticket deposits first. The operator must show evidence of those costs and cannot bill you beyond what you paid. If the operator cancels the trip, you get 100% back.

Licensing matters to you here. Licensed operators lodge a security deposit with the Department of Tourism, which exists to protect travellers if an operator fails to deliver. Ask any operator for its Tourism Authority licence number before you send money, and check it is printed on the quote or invoice.

How do cancellation windows compare in practice?

The closer you cancel to tee-off, the more of your money is already spent on suppliers. Early cancellation costs little or nothing.

In plain terms, the 30-day line is the one to diarise. Before it, a change of heart costs you only what suppliers have genuinely charged. After it, half your package is at stake, and inside two weeks only insurance stands between you and the full loss.

Which parts of a golf package are hardest to refund?

Flights and peak-season hotel rooms are the stickiest costs. Green fees and private transfers are usually the easiest to move or release.

Green fees are modest per round. In low season, all-in rates run from ฿1,950 at Gassan Legacy to ฿3,400 at Chiang Mai Highlands and ฿3,700 at Alpine (CMGT Golf, 2026). A four-round trip carries roughly ฿10,000 to ฿14,000 in course costs per player. Private transfers are usually simple to cancel, since the airport run from Chiang Mai International to most courses takes around 20 to 45 minutes and drivers rebook easily. Hotels over Christmas and New Year often take prepayment early, and flights are their own contract with the airline, never part of a refund from us.

Does high season change the deposit and cancellation terms?

Yes. November to February trips commit money earlier, because courses and hotels fill first and ask for payment sooner.

High season runs roughly November to March, and the cool, dry stretch from November to February is peak for golf. Popular tee times at Alpine and Highlands go first, and resort hotels near the courses tighten their own terms. That pushes more of your balance into the non-refundable column sooner. Low season, roughly April to October, is more forgiving: tee times are often available at short notice, so a cancelled round costs less to rebook.

For timing, our booking lead time by season guide covers how far ahead to commit, and last-minute availability covers what still works inside two weeks.

What if burning season or haze ruins my trip?

Poor air quality is not a supplier cancellation, so it rarely triggers a refund. Avoid booking March if air quality worries you.

Burning season runs roughly mid-January to mid-April and usually peaks in March, when Chiang Mai's PM2.5 readings can climb well into unhealthy levels and the city regularly appears near the top of global pollution rankings. Courses stay open through haze. That means a prepaid round is played or lost, not refunded. We flag this before you pay for any February to April trip, and our burning season golf guide explains the safer windows. If you have asthma or a heart condition, check whether your insurance treats a doctor's advice not to travel as a valid cancellation reason.

Can I change dates, courses or players after paying the deposit?

Usually yes, at cost price, if you ask early. Course swaps are easiest; moving into peak season is hardest.

Swapping Highlands for Royal Chiang Mai in the same week is a phone call in low season. Changing the number of golfers matters more than people expect: caddies are mandatory, one per golfer at around ฿300 to ฿400 each, so a smaller group changes the cart, caddie and transfer maths. Groups of 8 or more should read our Chiang Mai golf group trip guide, because one dropout can change room splits too.

What should I check on a quote before paying a deposit?

Five lines: deposit amount, balance date, the cancellation scale in days, what counts as a deductible cost, and the operator's licence.

Check that the quote names each course, each tee date and every inclusion. Our packages, from the Weekend Warrior 3-night to the Highlands Classic 5-night, list green fees, caddie fees, carts, hotel, private driver and airport transfers separately so you can see what a cancellation touches. The caddie tip of around ฿400 to ฿600 per round is never in a deposit, because you pay it in cash on the day.

Also check the payment method. A card payment gives you a chargeback route if a supplier fails, while a bank transfer does not. And read what the quote says about name changes: passing a place to a friend is often cheaper than cancelling outright.

Do I need travel insurance for a golf holiday in Thailand?

Yes. Inside 15 days, Thai rules give no package refund, and insurance is the only cover left for illness or emergencies.

Buy cover the day you pay the deposit. Look for cancellation cover, golf equipment cover and, ideally, unused green fee cover. Check the limit per item for clubs, since a full bag can be worth more than a standard baggage limit, and check whether the policy covers delayed bags, because a day without clubs means renting a set at the course. How do I book a Chiang Mai golf trip with clear terms?

Send an enquiry with dates and group size. We return a written quote with the deposit, balance date and cancellation scale before you pay.

Shortlist courses first: Alpine and Highlands for championship layouts, Gassan Legacy for value, Royal Chiang Mai for a quieter round north of the city. Then send us your dates, group size and handicaps. If you only have two days, the Layover 2-night package keeps the money at risk small. For longer trips, the Northern Value 4-night spreads three rounds across the week. Every plan starts at our golf holidays page.

Frequently asked questions

How much deposit do I pay for a Chiang Mai golf holiday?

It depends on the operator, so read the quote. As a market reference, Golfasian publishes a 20% deposit with the balance due 45 days before travel (accessed 6 October 2026). CMGT Golf works the same enquiry-first way: we send a written quote, the quote states the deposit amount and the balance date, and nothing is booked until you confirm. Peak-season trips from November to February may need a larger share paid earlier, because some resort courses and hotels ask for prepayment on December and January dates. Ask for the split in writing before you pay anything.

Can I get a full refund if I cancel my golf trip to Thailand?

Often yes, if you cancel early. Thailand's Department of Tourism rules, as reported by The Nation in June 2023, give a 100% refund on a tour package cancelled 30 or more days ahead, after documented third-party costs such as flight or ticket deposits are deducted. Cancel 15 to 29 days out and the guideline is 50%. Inside 15 days the operator is not obliged to refund. Individual contracts can be more generous than this, so compare the written terms on your quote with these legal floors before you pay.

What happens if it rains and my round in Chiang Mai is washed out?

Rain-out handling is set by each course, not by Thai law, and it differs from club to club. The rainy months from roughly June to October bring short afternoon storms, usually heaviest in September and October, while mornings are often playable. That is why we put rainy-season rounds on early tee times. If a round is stopped, ask the pro shop on the day whether it issues a credit for unplayed holes, and keep the receipt. Confirm the course's rain policy at booking rather than assuming a refund.

Should I buy travel insurance for a golf holiday in Thailand?

Yes. Insurance is the only thing that covers you inside the 15-day window, when Thai rules give no refund on a package. Look for a policy that names golf equipment and covers trip cancellation for illness, a family emergency or airline failure. Some policies also pay for unused green fees, which matters if you have prepaid four or five rounds. Buy it on the day you pay the deposit, not the week before you fly, because cancellation cover usually starts from the purchase date.

Can I change dates or swap courses after booking a Chiang Mai golf package?

Usually, if you ask early. Swapping one course for another in the same week is the easiest change, because low-season tee times from April to October are often available at short notice. Moving dates into the November to February peak is harder, because popular courses fill first. Changes close to travel can carry a fee if a hotel or course has already charged us. We tell you the cost of any change before we make it, and nothing moves without your written okay.
