36 Holes a Day in Chiang Mai: Is It Doable and Where?

Yes, 36 holes a day in Chiang Mai is doable. Here are the course pairings, tee times, floodlight options and caddie costs that make a double round work.

Yes, 36 holes in a day in Chiang Mai is doable: tee off at 06:30, finish the first 18 by about 11:00, eat lunch, and start the second round by 12:30, or later under the floodlights at Gassan Legacy. With 11 to 13 hours of daylight and 4 to 4.5 hour cart rounds, the plan works. The weather, your legs and the course pairing decide whether it stays fun.

Can you really play 36 holes in one day in Chiang Mai?

Yes. Caddies drive the carts, rounds run 4 to 4.5 hours, and Gassan Legacy's floodlights cover a late finish.

Three things make Chiang Mai one of the easier places in Asia for a double round. Carts with caddies are standard, so you are not walking 36 holes. Several courses open at first light. And Gassan Legacy Golf Club, a short drive south of the city in Lamphun, is floodlit, so a slow afternoon does not cost you the last few holes.

What makes it hard is the climate. A second 18 in 32C heat is a different game from the first one. Most of our guests who try a 36-hole day play the morning round well and the afternoon round on feel. Plan for that, rather than expecting two equal rounds.

If you are still deciding which courses to play at all, start with our ranking of the best golf courses in Chiang Mai, then come back here to plan the double.

How much daylight do you have for a double round?

Between about 11 hours in December and just over 13 hours in June. Two rounds plus lunch need roughly 10 hours, so winter is tight.

According to timeanddate.com's Chiang Mai sun tables (accessed 5 October 2026), sunrise in early October is around 06:15 to 06:20 and sunset around 18:10, close to 12 hours of usable light. In December that falls to around 11 hours, with sunset close to 18:00.

Here is the arithmetic we use when building a 36-hole day:

  • First round: 4 to 4.5 hours with a cart and caddie (CMGT Golf, 2026)
  • Lunch and turnaround: 45 to 60 minutes
  • Second round: 4.5 to 5 hours, because you slow down and the afternoon fields are busier
  • Transfer if you change courses: allow 30 to 60 minutes

That totals 10 to 11.5 hours. In December, on an unlit course, there is no slack for a slow group ahead or a rain delay.

Which course pairings work best for 36 holes?

Stay at one venue if you can. Gassan Legacy day plus night is the safest pairing; Highlands on 27 holes gives variety without a transfer.

Changing courses at lunchtime sounds appealing, but it adds a transfer, a new check-in, a new caddie and new greens to learn while you are tired. We only recommend it when the second course is floodlit.

Chiang Mai Highlands Golf & Spa is one of the best-conditioned courses in the region, and its 27 holes let you play two different 18-hole combinations with one nine repeated. The greens are quick and the views across the valley keep the second loop interesting. Alpine Golf Resort is a different proposition: it plays well over 7,000 yards from the back tees, with long par 5s, so most mid-handicappers fade badly on the second loop. Move up a tee box for round two if you try it.

North Hill City Golf Club sits close to the city and the airport and plays like a private club, which makes it a strong morning round before you head to Lamphun for lit golf at Gassan Legacy. North Hill does not publish its fees, so treat any figure as an estimate until we confirm it. Summit Green Valley Country Club works the same way as a morning round, with plenty of water in play.

Our course pairings guide covers which courses combine well across a whole trip, not just in one day.

What tee times should you book for a double round?

Book the first tee at 06:30 or earlier and the second by 12:30. On a floodlit course, a 15:00 start is still safe.

The first tee time matters most. An early start gets you through the front nine before the heat arrives and keeps you ahead of the mid-morning groups. Ask for the first or second slot of the day, especially in high season when many visitors want the same window. Hotel breakfast rarely opens that early, so arrange a packed breakfast or eat at the clubhouse.

For the second round, there are two good options:

  • Straight through: turn around after a 45-minute lunch and tee off around 11:30 to 12:30. You play in the hottest part of the day, but daylight is never an issue.
  • Split day: rest through the midday heat, then start at 15:00 or later under floodlights at Gassan Legacy, where Golfasian lists twilight and night play from 15:00 (accessed 5 October 2026). Cooler, but you finish in the dark.

What does a 36-hole day cost?

Two full green fee, caddie and cart bundles plus two tips. In the green season that runs from about ฿4,400 at Gassan Legacy to over ฿8,000 at Alpine.

You pay for two rounds, not one long one. Every round in Thailand carries a mandatory caddie, and the caddie fee goes to the course each time, typically ฿300 to ฿400 in Chiang Mai. The tip goes separately, in cash, to the caddie: our guidance is ฿400 to ฿600 per 18 (CMGT Golf, 2026). Our caddie culture and tipping guide explains the etiquette.

Worked examples using green-season all-in rates (CMGT Golf, 2026):

  • Gassan Legacy day and night: ฿1,950 + ฿1,650 = ฿3,600, plus ฿800 to ฿1,200 in tips
  • Chiang Mai Highlands twice: ฿3,400 + ฿3,400 = ฿6,800, plus ฿800 to ฿1,200 in tips
  • Alpine twice: ฿3,700 + ฿3,700 = ฿7,400, plus tips

Some clubs offer a cheaper replay rate for a second round on the same day. These offers change often and are rarely published, so ask at booking rather than counting on one. A private driver for the day adds roughly ฿1,400 to ฿2,500, which matters more on a 36-hole day because you will not want to wait for a Grab at 19:00 with a tired back and a wet golf bag.

Which months make 36 holes realistic, and which do not?

November to February is best. June to October works with a dawn start. March to May is hot and smoky, so skip the double round.

  • Nov to Feb (cool, dry): cool mornings on the highland courses, with highs usually around 28 to 32C. Ideal for 36 holes, but December has the least daylight and tee times are hardest to get.
  • Mar to May (hot): heat often passes 35C and overlaps the burning season. A second round in these conditions is a health risk, not a challenge.
  • Jun to Oct (green season): cheapest rates and quieter courses. Mornings are usually playable, but afternoon storms, typically heaviest in September and October, can stop the second round.

Our month-by-month view is in the best time for golf in Chiang Mai guide.

How do you manage heat and fatigue across 36 holes?

Drink before you are thirsty, eat a real lunch, change your shirt and glove at the turn, and treat the second round as a casual game.

What works for our guests:

  • Drink at least one bottle of water per three holes, and add electrolytes from the first nine, not after you feel it
  • Eat a proper lunch with carbohydrates and salt. Clubhouse Thai fried rice or noodles is ideal
  • Pack a second shirt, a second glove and spare socks. Changing at lunch makes a real difference in green-season humidity
  • Ride the cart. The caddie drives; let them
  • Book a Thai massage for that evening, not the next morning

Our golf fitness and heat prep guide covers the weeks before the trip, and the golf and Thai massage recovery guide covers the evening after.

Is the second round worth it?

Often not for the score. Scores rise, focus drops, and in the green season rain can end it early. Play it for the experience.

The honest downside: most golfers we host score noticeably worse on the second 18. Fatigue shows first in putting. Under floodlights, greens are harder to read, and the edges of the fairway fall into shadow, so expect a few more lost balls.

There is also the next day to think about. A 36-hole day on day two of a five-round trip can leave you flat for the next two rounds. If you are on a trip with a fixed number of rounds, it is often better to spread them out than to stack them.

When it does pay off: a short trip where you want the most golf from the fewest days, a group that wants a "big day" to remember, or a layover where you only have one full day on the ground.

Should you book a 36-hole day yourself or through a package?

For one double round at one course, booking direct works. For several days with transfers and floodlit second rounds, a package saves time and risk.

If you are already in Chiang Mai and want one 36-hole day at Gassan Legacy, you can book it directly and pay the course. Two rounds at one venue is simple.

It gets harder when you add a transfer between courses, a dawn pickup, a floodlit tee time and a driver who must wait until 19:30. That is where an operator earns its fee. Our golf holidays bundle green fees, caddies, carts, hotel, a private driver, airport transfers and on-the-ground support, and we can build a 36-hole day into any of them. The Lanna Signature 7-night package has room for one, and the Weekend Warrior 3-night package suits golfers who want to fit more golf into a short trip. We work on enquiry: tell us your dates and we send a quote, confirmed with a deposit.

Frequently asked questions

Can you play 36 holes in one day in Chiang Mai?

Yes, but only with a plan. Chiang Mai gets roughly 11 to 13 hours of daylight depending on the month, and a cart round with a caddie usually takes 4 to 4.5 hours. Two rounds plus lunch fill about 10 hours, which leaves little margin in December. The safest way is a 06:30 first tee time followed by a second round at a floodlit course such as Gassan Legacy, where the lights cover you if the afternoon runs late. Without floodlights, stay at one venue so you lose no time to a transfer.

Which Chiang Mai course is best for a 36-hole day?

Gassan Legacy Golf Club is our first pick. It is floodlit, it is a relatively flat and forgiving layout, and it runs separate day and night rates (฿1,950 and ฿1,650 all-in in the 2026 green season, CMGT Golf data). You can play both rounds there without a transfer. Chiang Mai Highlands has 27 holes, so you can mix nines and avoid replaying the same 18, but it is not lit. Alpine is one of the longest layouts in the north, so 36 holes there is very tiring.

How much does 36 holes in a day cost in Chiang Mai?

Budget for two full green fee, caddie and cart bundles, plus two caddie tips. At Gassan Legacy that comes to ฿3,600 in green-season all-in fees, plus ฿800 to ฿1,200 in tips for two caddies. At Chiang Mai Highlands, two rounds at the ฿3,400 green-season all-in rate come to ฿6,800 before tips. Some courses offer a reduced replay rate for a second round on the same day, but this changes often, so confirm it at booking. A private driver for the day adds roughly ฿1,400 to ฿2,500.

What is the best month to play 36 holes in Chiang Mai?

November to February. Mornings are cool on the highland courses and afternoon highs usually sit around 28 to 32C, so a second round is still comfortable. The trade-off is that this is peak season, so tee times are hardest to get and December has the shortest daylight, about 11 hours. Avoid March to May: heat often passes 35C and the burning season pushes air quality into unhealthy levels on many days. June to October works for the morning round, but afternoon storms, usually heaviest in September and October, can wash out the second 18.

Do I need a new caddie for my second round?

Usually yes. Thai courses assign one caddie per golfer per round, and you pay the caddie fee to the course each time, typically ฿300 to ฿400 in Chiang Mai. If you stay at the same course, you can ask to keep the same caddie for the second round, and many will agree if they are fresh. Either way, tip each caddie separately in cash at the bag drop after their round. Our guidance is ฿400 to ฿600 per 18 holes, more for an excellent caddie who carried you through a long day.
