Stag Do Golf in Thailand: A Chiang Mai Planning Guide

Planning a stag do golf trip in Thailand? Chiang Mai courses, green fees from ฿1,650, group logistics, night golf and the honest downsides, from an operator.

By The Chiang Mai Go Tours team07 Oct 20269 min read

A Chiang Mai stag do golf trip works best as four nights, three or four rounds, one floodlit night round and one rest day, with green-season all-in rounds from about ฿1,650 to ฿3,700 per player. It is often cheaper than a European golf stag, and calmer than Pattaya. Here is how we plan them on the ground.

Why pick Chiang Mai over Pattaya or Europe for a golf stag?

Chiang Mai gives you better golf per baht, cooler mornings in high season, and nightlife that is fun without swallowing the whole trip.

Pattaya has more courses and a louder night scene. Portugal and Spain are a short flight from the UK. Chiang Mai sits between them. The courses are usually less crowded than the Eastern Seaboard, the valley mornings are cool from November to February, and a round at a championship course costs less than a round at many UK clubs.

The trade-off is honest. There is no beach, the flight from Europe usually means a connection through Bangkok, and the bar scene is small next to Pattaya's Walking Street. If the group's top priority is a pool party, Chiang Mai is the wrong pick. If it is golf first and a few good nights second, it is the right one. Our full golf in Chiang Mai page sets out what we arrange.

Which Chiang Mai courses suit a stag group?

Mix one bucket-list course, one fun mid-price round and one floodlit night round, so stronger and weaker golfers all get a day they enjoy.

Alpine Golf Resort is the bragging-rights round. Chiang Mai Highlands is the best-kept course and has the spa for the morning after. Gassan Legacy and Summit Green Valley are floodlit. North Hill suits an arrival-day nine or a cheap final round before the flight. For the full spread, read our ranking of the best golf courses in Chiang Mai.

A mixed-ability stag is the norm. Off-the-tee strength matters less at Gassan Legacy, where the fairways are wide and flat, while Alpine and Highlands reward the single-figure players in the group. Playing one of each keeps the 28-handicappers from losing a sleeve of balls by the turn and still gives the low markers a real test.

What does a good stag golf itinerary look like?

Four nights and three rounds suits most groups: arrive, play two days, take the stag night under floodlights, then recover with spa time before flying.

  • Day 1: Land at CNX, about 4 km from the Old City. Check in, group dinner, early night.
  • Day 2: Highlands or Alpine at 7:30am, while everyone is fresh. Afternoon by the pool.
  • Day 3: Late breakfast, floodlit round at Gassan Legacy or Summit Green Valley, then straight into the stag night.
  • Day 4: Rest day. Thai massage, lunch, no tee time before noon.
  • Day 5: Optional morning round at North Hill near the airport, then fly.

Our Weekend Warrior package covers 3 nights and 3 rounds for a tight stag. The Northern Value package adds a fourth night. Bigger budgets can build on the Highlands Classic with 4 rounds over 5 nights.

How much does a stag golf trip to Chiang Mai cost?

Expect about ฿1,650-3,700 per player per round in green season, plus tips, hotel, vans and nights out. We quote each group by enquiry.

Published one-week Chiang Mai packages from larger operators, with hotel, four rounds and transfers, start in the mid-twenties of thousands of baht per person. That is a useful market reference, not our price. CMGT Golf quotes each group by enquiry because a 6-man stag in July and a 14-man stag in January need different hotels, vans and tee-time blocks.

A package covers green fees, caddies, carts, hotel, private driver, airport transfers and someone on the phone when a tee time moves. When a package does not pay off: a group of four playing one round can book direct and take a Grab. Once you have three or more rounds and two vans of golfers, the logistics are what you are paying for.

How do you move 8 to 16 golfers and their bags around?

Book private vans, roughly one for every four golfers with clubs. Standard Grab cars rarely fit four golf bags, and pickups from remote courses are unreliable.

The courses ring the valley, mostly 30-45 minutes out, and Gassan Khuntan is further still. A standard Grab car takes two golf bags at most. For a 12-man group that means three vans with luggage space, booked for a fixed pickup time. Self-arranged transfers are where stag trips lose an hour every morning: one car late, one driver at the wrong hotel, one golfer still in bed.

We set one pickup point for the whole group, ideally a single hotel, and build in a 15-minute buffer before the first tee. The group trip guide covers splitting groups into four-balls and tee-time blocks.

How should a stag group handle caddies?

Every golfer gets a caddie, so budget the tip per player per round and treat caddies as working professionals, not party guests.

Caddie fees to the course typically run ฿300-400 in Chiang Mai. The tip is separate, around ฿400-600 per 18, handed over in cash at the end of the round. For 12 golfers over three rounds, that is ฿14,400-21,600 in tips for the group. Have the best man collect a tip kitty on day one. Caddies are mostly women, they read greens and help with the cart, and courses do not tolerate drunken behaviour towards them. Our caddie culture and tipping guide goes further.

What should the group know about Thai law before flying?

Vapes are illegal, alcohol sales have set hours, and carrying cannabis out of Thailand gets people arrested. Brief the group before the flight.

The UK government's Thailand safety and security advice states that possessing or using vapes and e-cigarettes is illegal in Thailand and can bring heavy fines. Alcohol sales are restricted to set hours, and the advice warns about drink spiking in tourist areas. The main FCDO Thailand page warns that carrying cannabis out of the country is illegal and that travellers have been arrested at airports for it. One confiscated vape at the airport can cost the stag a whole morning, so read the current advice before you fly.

When should a stag group book, and which months to avoid?

November to February is best for golf. Avoid March for the smoke, and enquire two to three months ahead for groups of eight or more.

MonthsGolf conditionsStag verdict
Nov-FebCool, dry, clear early morningsBest, but book early
Mar-AprHot and often smokyAvoid
May-OctHumid, afternoon storms, cheapestGood value with early tee times
Source: CMGT Golf seasonal data, 2026. Burning season runs roughly late January to April and usually peaks in March.

March is the honest downside of Chiang Mai. In a bad year, PM2.5 readings climb into the unhealthy range for days at a time and the mountain views disappear. Check IQAir's Chiang Mai readings before you commit dates, and read our burning season golf guide if the wedding date forces a March stag.

What do stag groups do between rounds?

Massage, food and one big night is the usual mix. Nimman and the Night Bazaar area cover drinks without needing a beach.

A two-hour Thai massage after a round is some of the best value in town, and our golf and Thai massage recovery guide lists where to go. For evenings, the after-round nightlife guide covers Nimman's bars and the livelier strip near the Night Bazaar. A khao soi lunch in the Old City or a group dinner at a riverside restaurant fills the rest day well. Keep the big night before the rest day, not before the Alpine tee time.

How do you book a Chiang Mai stag golf trip with us?

Send dates, headcount, rough handicaps and a hotel level. We reply with a quote, then confirm tee times and vans once the deposit lands.

CMGT Golf is enquiry-driven. We do not sell instant bookings, because a stag group needs tee-time blocks held together, vans sized to the bags and a course mix that fits the group's range of handicaps. The steps are simple: you enquire, we send a quote with the course mix and hotel options, you confirm the headcount, and we lock tee times and vans. Tell us what the groom wants and we build around it on our Chiang Mai golf holidays page.

Frequently asked questions

Is Chiang Mai good for a stag do golf trip?

Yes, if golf is the main event and the nightlife is a bonus. Chiang Mai has more than a dozen courses within about 45 minutes of the city, green-season all-in rounds from about ฿1,650 (Gassan Legacy at night) to ฿3,700 (Alpine), and floodlit courses for evening golf. The nightlife is lively in Nimman and around the Night Bazaar but far calmer than Pattaya or Phuket. Groups who want a beach party with a round on the side should look south. Groups who want strong rounds, good food and a few big nights pick Chiang Mai.

How many rounds should a stag golf trip in Chiang Mai include?

Three or four rounds over four to six nights works for most groups. That leaves one rest day and at least one late morning after the big night. Typical one-week Chiang Mai packages from the bigger operators run four rounds across seven days with a free day in the middle, which matches what we see work on the ground. Five rounds in five days sounds great in the group chat, then the hangovers hit on day three. Put the hardest course early and keep the floodlit round for the stag night itself.

Do caddies work with big stag groups in Chiang Mai?

Yes. Thai courses assign one caddie per golfer, so a 12-man stag means 12 caddies, and there is no opt-out. The caddie fee to the course usually runs ฿300-400 in Chiang Mai, and the tip is separate: around ฿400-600 per 18 holes, paid in cash. Caddies are mostly women and they are working, so keep the banter respectful. For 12 golfers over four rounds, tips alone come to roughly ฿19,200-28,800 for the group, so budget them before you fly.

When is the best time of year for a stag golf trip to Chiang Mai?

November to February is best: cool mornings, dry fairways, low humidity and clear mountain views. It is also the busiest and dearest window, so a group of eight or more should enquire two to three months ahead. Avoid March. Burning season runs roughly from late January to April and usually peaks in March, when air quality can reach unhealthy levels for days at a time. June to October is cheapest, with short afternoon storms, so book early tee times.

How much does a stag golf trip to Chiang Mai cost?

The main costs are the round (about ฿1,650-3,700 all-in per player in green season), caddie tips (around ฿400-600 per round), hotel, private vans, food and nights out. Published one-week packages from larger operators start in the mid-twenties of thousands of baht per person before tips and drinks. CMGT Golf prices each group by quote, because group size, season, hotel level and course mix all move the number. Send your dates and headcount through our golf page and we will come back with a full quote.
